Ferrite Recording Studio
Professional audio recording & multi-track editing
Ferrite is free to download and offers many useful tools, but if you’re a professional, you’ll want to unlock the full power of Ferrite 3 Pro. Here’s a guide to what the full version of Ferrite has to offer:
Recording
Recording in Ferrite is flexible but streamlined to avoid distraction. Open the app, and with one tap you’re recording — no fiddling with projects.
Mono or Stereo Mics
Use the ones built in to your iPhone or iPad, or connect a high-quality external mic via USB. Supports stereo recording (including with the built-in mics on compatible devices).
Long Duration
Ferrite supports long recordings – many hours1 if you need it to – without breaking a sweat. Pause and resume as often as you like.
Multi Channels
Connect a compatible USB Audio Interface and record up to 8 channels at a time.
Lossy or Lossless
Make the most of your storage space by recording Lossy MPEG-4 files. Or use Apple Lossless for the very highest quality.
Monitoring
Monitor levels with the live recording meters, or listen through headphones.
If you’re monitoring two mics routed through a stereo input, you can even adjust the “spread” so it doesn’t sound like each person is talking directly into your left and right ears.
Bookmarks
Need to highlight a few quotes from an interview? Or take out some inappropriate language? Or just fluffed a sentence and had to start it again? Bookmark moments during your recording and they’ll be flagged up during edits, so you can jump right to them.
Library
All your recordings and projects are kept together in your Library. Ferrite provides powerful ways to find and organise them.
Tagging
Tag your audio clips and projects to locate them quickly later using whatever naming scheme you like — even emoji 🙃
You can also assign colours to your tags, so they stand out in your Library.
Smart Tags
Ferrite auto-tags audio clips with info like whether they’re mono or stereo, or recorded in Ferrite or imported from elsewhere. Smart Tags are kept separate, so they won’t interfere with your hand-crafted ones.
Search Panel
Search for items using tags, smart tags, kinds of items (audio, projects, archives, templates), or search for text inside their titles, bookmarks, chapter titles, notes and more.
Smart Search Bar
Type into the Search Bar and Ferrite will suggest common search tools for you, saving you a trip to the Search Panel. If you have a keyboard connected, you can use it to navigate the suggestions or jump around inside the app.
Smart Folders
Show only the items that match your rules — like a search that’s always ready and waiting. You can narrow the search down even further using the Search Bar.
Template Folders
Like automatic Smart Folders for each Template you make, these show the template itself, any projects you make from it, any archives you make of those, and any audio you recorded or imported into the Template Folder.
2× Preview
Save time by listening to projects or audio clips at up to 2× speed — both in the Library, and while you’re editing projects.
Audio Clip Tools
Sometimes your audio needs a helping hand before its ready for editing.
Auto Levelling
Balance volume levels throughout a recording, making it easier to see and hear while you work.
Noise Reduction
Can help reduce the amount of background noise in a recording.
Channel Selection
Pick which channels to use from a multichannel recording, or flip left and right channels if the mics were the wrong way round.
Channel Splitting
Split channels off as separate files for individual editing — perfect if you recorded two or more mics into a single file, but want each on their own track.
Bookmark Editing
Add and edit bookmark labels and types — especially helpful when one person makes the recording and another will be doing the editing.
Format Conversion
Convert stereo audio to mono, or to 44.1kHz sample rate, or from one audio format to another.
Editing
When it’s time to edit your audio, you create a Project, add your clips, and arrange them.
Full Multi-Track Editing
Tracks are where you arrange your audio clips. Edit audio across up to 32 tracks, adjust each track’s volume and panning, and mute or solo them.
Edit at a Clip
Clips can be moved, cropped, uncropped, sliced, merged, deleted, cut, copied and pasted. Fade them in or out, and crossfade between clips simply by overlapping them.
Zoo(oooooo)oom
Zoom out and see hours of audio at a glance, or zoom in all the way down to individual samples — using the same “pinch” gesture you use for photos or web pages.
Non-Destructive
No matter how much you edit a Project, the original audio clips are untouched. So you can trim away without fear of losing something important — the originals are still safe and sound.
Full Undo and Redo
Even after you close your Project or switch to another app, you can come back to it and Undo/Redo changes.
Automatic Ducking
Set tracks to automatically “duck under” others (for example, ducking music behind voice-overs).
Strip Silence
Automatically carve away silent sections from recordings, making it easy to edit the remaining audio.
Tighten Audio
Pack together clips, taking out or reducing the gaps between them.
Effects
Add professional effects to your tracks or the final mix, such as a customisable 8-band EQ, noise gating, and dynamic range compression, for projects that sound clean and engaging.
Automation
Set volume, panning and effects settings to vary over time, both on individual tracks and for the final mix.
Ride the Dials
Adjust automated parameters during playback, and your changes are recorded into the timeline.
Precise Control
Fine-tune a curve you’ve recorded or design one from scratch to be just the way you want it.
Auto Levelling
Can check your project when you share it, and make adjustments to volume levels to keep them even, professional-sounding, and free of clipping.
Presets
Save your favourite settings for effects and other commands as presets for reuse later. Keep them on your device or in iCloud, or store them inside Templates to keep them handy for particular shows.
Templates
Create templates for your podcasts or shows to speed up production of new episodes. If you use Placeholders, details like episode number or air date can be automatically filled in to settings such as the episode title, exported filename or copyright date.
Import
Of course, you can import audio from file storage on your device or elsewhere to use in your projects.
All Your Files
Ferrite integrates the iOS Files app, so you can browse for files on your device, connected drives, or on the cloud services you have installed.
Apps Too
If you have an app that exports audio files using the iOS Share Sheet, you can send them to Ferrite from there.
Drag & Drop
Import audio and archives from other apps by dropping them into Ferrite’s Library. You can drop in artwork or links to use in your projects too.
Roll Camera
Select compatible videos in your camera roll, and Ferrite can extract their soundtracks as audio files.
One for the Archives
Not just audio: you can import archives containing projects, templates, audio or video into your Library. In Ferrite, you can browse and unpack their files, and even drag a file out of the archive viewer and drop it into another app, if that app supports it.
Export
Whether you want to send a pristine recording to a colleague for editing, or upload a finished podcast, you have plenty of choice.
M4A, MP3, WAV and CAF
Mono or stereo, with a choice of quality levels (bitrates) for Lossy files (M4A/MP3).
MP3 Chapters
Show up in many podcast players and can include links to websites.
Chapter Artwork
Illustrate your podcasts with chapter art, in compatible players.
Video
For uploading to social networks that don’t accept audio uploads. Will show cover art, chapter art, or a placeholder if nothing else is available.
Project Archives
Archive projects for backup, moving them from one device to another, or recovering storage space.
Audio Archives
Archive one or several audio files at once, along with their Ferrite bookmarks and settings.
Track Archives
These contain one audio file for each track in a project — if you’ve edited a project in Ferrite but want to finish production work on a desktop computer, this is the easiest way.
MP3 Chapter Text/JSON
A list of chapters, their timestamps and links, in plain-text or JSON formats, for processing in scripts or content management systems.

Everyone is different, so customise Ferrite to find your best workflow.2
Touch, Apple Pencil, Mouse, Trackpad or Keyboard
However you prefer to work, Ferrite has you covered. You can enable custom touch or Pencil gestures to speed up your editing, or leave them off to keep it simple.
Split Screen and Multi Window
Place Ferrite side-by-side with your notes while you record. Have a browser open in one window to look up links that you drop into MP3 Chapters in the other. Or Slide Over a window with the User Guide for reference if you’re just getting started.
Custom Key Layouts
Pick from one of several popular keyboard shortcut schemes, or make one to your own exact preferences.
Shortcuts Bar
Add your favourite commands to a custom toolbar for quick access, or hide it for maximum screen space.
Fully Accessible
Ferrite supports VoiceOver throughout the app, including options like a chime to warn you if audio is clipping. There’s also support for other accessibility features like Differentiate Without Colour and large font sizes.
Available in Five Languages
Ferrite is available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish — but please note we can only offer Customer Support and the User Guide in English at this time.
The free version of Ferrite limits the duration of recordings and editing projects. Ferrite 3 Pro can edit projects up to 24 hours long. For recordings, Ferrite itself can just keep on recording forever, but your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will run out of space eventually, and then it has to stop. To get the most out of the space, Ferrite compresses your recordings. You can choose lossless compression, which gives perfect reproduction but larger files, or lossy compression, which offers smaller files while still keeping the quality great. If you are making very long recordings, be aware that some sharing services may have limits on how much audio you can send to them. ↫
